2018 TOP GUNS - RACE SUMMARIES
The 2018 Shootout Top Gun was Tony Battiato and John Cosker with their 204 mph run in Don Onken's American Ethanol 51-foot Mystic catamaran. That run also made them the Professional Cat class winner. American Ethanol has been Top Gun for four years in a row. Cosker has been in the cockpit for all four of those years; Battiato ran with him in 2017 as well.
In the Professional V-Hull class, Jim Schultz and Mike Faucher took the win in Factory Billet with an impressive 162 mph run.
In the Non-Professional V-Hull class, Dennis and Jason Parvey continued their reign, with their 153 mph run in Black Thunder. That put them far ahead of the rest, with the next fastest run by Chad Prater at 104 mph.
In the Non-Professional Cat class, Dave Southern soared far above the crowded class, with a 165 mph run in his 38-foot Skater 388 Pure Platinum. Southern's race was especially memorable for the crew aboard the start boat: his rooster tail soaked them as he sped away from the starting line.
In the Manufacturer V-Hull class, Mark Weigl took home the trophy, with a jaw-dropping 125 mph run in the 28-foot TUFF 28.
In the Manufacturer Cat class, Tony Chiaramonte took the cake, with a 168 mph run in a (gorgeous) brand-new, DCB M-35.
In the Pontoon class, Brad Rowland in Tooned In Two held off serious competition from newcomer King Floater driven by racing veteran Jim Dorris, but not before King Floater tied Rowland's first run of 98 mph. Rowland topped that with a 106 mph victory.
The weekend's fastest PWC driver was Steve Lee in his watercraft that can't seem to be beaten: Let's Dance. Lee hit a dizzying 78 mph on his PWC to keep his Top PWC title from 2017.
There were 70 race classes in 2018: class divisions are created based on hull type, engine modifications, and driver classification. Many classes only had one competitor last year (challengers welcome!), but others were stacked with three, four, or five racers.
